Looking Good and Being Healthy Without Going Overboard

Thanks to excessive stress on Fashion, beauty and fitness, the Modern woman is under severe stress. Her pressures are Different from those which Dogged the woman of the ’70s And the 80s.

Earlier she had to Bend backwards, juggle her roles of Homemaker and career woman. She also had to battle gender bias and discrimination at the work place with the beauty business picking up in the Indian sub continent, after Indian girls began winning international beauty pageants, women have realized that they must keep their bodies in good shape if they want to be noticed, appreciated and applauded.

While there is nothing wrong in being physically fit and up-to-date with the latest in the fashion world, it is disturbing to see increasing obsession in both these areas. Crash diets and miracle routines are being followed blindly, just to be able to shed unwanted kilos.

Surgical interventions like liposuction, tummy tucks, laser treatments, face and breast lifts are being done by women not just from the upper income brackets but also the middle class.

And this obsession does not apply to just the teenager, but also to the Married woman who is in her 30s and 40s.

The late Princess Diana perhaps started the trend with her bulimia. This and anorexia art both eating disorders related to weight reduction and today you have college girls, new mothers, working women and homemakers following paranoid diets, desperate to shed the extra kilos.

Then there are hordes of creams and lotions for day use, night use and for oily, dry, patchy, flaky and combination skins. There are also anti-wrinkle creams, face packs and what-have-you, all targeting their pricy wares at this segment of women who are driven by the single-motive of looking young and good.
