Where you are a year from now is largely down to your own choices. The number one catalyst in the choices we make is fear. That’s the reason most people take a job. Have they found the position and salary they really want? No — they say, Tm afraid I may not get another, so I’d better take it.’ People settle. And often end up doing something they don’t want to because they feel it’s expected or they re afraid of what will happen if they say no. And people are unwilling to try anything that goes against the flow of their lives.
The majority of the workforce is unremarkable. They arrive on time, do their job, leave. The difference between winners and losers is not that they are more clever or prettier; they are willing to do things other people wont. Take TV shows. I’ve heard that some presenters show up 15 to 20 minutes before start time. They aren’t prepared and it shows. I’m at the studio 7am to 5pm. In that time, I do two one-hour shows. The other eight hours, I’m preparing for those two hours.
DR PHIL’S ADVICE Ask yourself’, ‘What do 1 want to do? What is it that I’m really good at? What are my passions?’ Then research the jobs where you can put them to use. Think of your job as being in business for yourself, your client is your employer and how hard you work to distinguish yourself is up to you. If you want to break out of the herd, start coming up with extra ideas and get actively involved. It eats up some of your time and takes effort; if you’re willing to invest that, it isn’t so hard to distinguish yourself, since most people aren’t trying to…
