Popular belief considers arthritis a senior citizens’ ailment, but it can strike early. Once the joint is damaged beyond repair, surgical joint replacement is the only answer. So see your doctor at the first sign of pain, swelling and restriction of movement in a joint.
• The aim is to control pain as well as stop the disease from progressing. Glucosamines (Cartilamine, Rejoint) arrest the damage.
“Hyaluronidase injections or steroids can also be prescribed.
• Rest the joint. Don’t flex it or place weight on it. Avoid sitting cross-legged or taking the stairs.
• Foment the affected joint with hot water or apply Voveran or Nimulid for pain relief. If the pain persists, take Crocin or Combiflam.
• Watch your posture and shoes (avoid high heels; get sole support). ‘Maintain an ideal weight and get 30-45 minutes’ exercise: swimming and cycling are particularly good, but walking and yoga help too.
