ANTICIPATING DISASTER
Recent researchers have also found out that an individual’s patterns of thinking, particularly the tendency to anticipate disaster, is the cause for some phobia victims. But at the same time, a phobia is sometimes rnisdiagnosed as anxiety neurosis, psychomotor epilepsy or schizophreÂnia and treated with anti-psychotic drugs, tranquillizers or shock treatÂments. Such treatment is useless and totally ineffective.
So we cannot pinpoint a specific cause for a phobia. Agoraphobia (the fear of open spaces, the market-place, the streets, the parks — these people become completely house-bound) has biologiÂcal reasons.
Most victims of phobias have their initial panic attack within a year of a major life crisis such as a divorce, job change, and death in the family or severe illÂness.
It is said that women are more prone to agoraÂphobia than men probably due to their lower level of testosterone. Some othÂers opine that women are conditioned to be more dependent, unassertive and prone to irrational behaviour and therefore they fall easy victim to agoÂraphobia,
