The Simple Secret to Great Hair

Today, shampoos do more than clean. OIL CONTROL: Look for Starch, citric acid, sorbitol, jojoba, aloe, kaolin. Avoid thick, pearly or moisturising formulae. Tip Wash pillowcases often; keep hands out of your hair. Try Neutrogena Clean Balance Shampoo; Medicare Salon Ceramide Enriched Oily Hair Shampoo. VOLUME: Look for Soya or wheat protein, guar gum, sodium, polyquat-erntum-10. Avoid Deep-conditioning shampoos - they flatten fine hair. Tip Lift by drying hair ‘the wrong way’ - if you part right, flip left to dry. Try Garnier Fructis Fortifying Shampoo; Wella Biotech Volume Nutrition. SMOOTH, FRIZZ-FREE: Look for Collagen, silicones, acrylates, citrus,Creatine, vitamins B3 and B6, avocado oil. Avoid Volumising products. Tip Towel-dry gently, then blow-dry on medium power, high heat. Try TIGI Bed Head Control Freak Shampoo; Citre Shine Smooth out Shampoo.
CURLS: Look for Polyquaternium-10, stearamidopropyt dim ethylamine, silicones, glycerin, and cetyl alcohol. Avoid Products for damaged hair - moisture can distort curls or cause frizz. Tip Use a light conditioner. Try Wella System Professional Curl Saver Shampoo; L’Oreal Vive CurI-Moisture Shampoo.
DRYNESS REPAIR: Look for Silk protein, panthenol, keratin, lecithin, amino acids (words ending in -ine). Avoid anything for oily hair. Tip Hair’s better when it dries faster. Try Pantene Pro-V Moisturizing Shampoo; Sun silk Naturals Silky Strength. COLOUR PROTECTION: Look for Sunscreen (oxy- or -cinnamate words), dim ethylamine glutamate, vitamin E. Avoid Clarifying formulae. Tip Try one with henna (red); rosemary, coffee or tea (brown/ black). Try L’Oreal Vive Color-Care Shampoo; Gamier Ultra Doux Shampoo for Coloured Hair.
SHINE: Look for Silicones (words on the label ending in -icone), fruit acids. Avoid Creamy, colourful or moisturising formulae (may leave film). Tip Blot excess water before working in shampoo. This cleans better than applying to drippy hair. Try Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek Shampoo; TIGI Bed Head Dumb
Blonde Shampoo.
You Love your hair:
BUT THE PROBLEM IS: The wrong tool or the wrong technique can tangle or, worse, tear your hair out.
YOU’RE IN TROUBLE WHEN: With your back to a lamp, you look in a mirror and see tiny hairs sticking up along your parting and hairline. These aren’t ‘baby hairs’ growing in; they’re hairs that have broken.
DAMAGE-CONTROL PLAN; Bristles are the key to preventing breakage. They should be soft, smooth - avoid those plastic balls on the ends - and spaced out, as on a comb. Don’t brush wet hair (it’s fragile) and work in inch-long sections, from ends to roots.
