Generally women between the ages of 18 and 35 are easily affected by panic attack. Psychiatrists advise that these attacks should not be taken lightly as they are likely to worsen quickly. So once you feel that you have become a victim, you should take treatment immediately from a psychiatrist or psychologist experienced in dealing with phobias.
There was a time when phobias were considered incurable, but now modern treatments are available. The first person to develop a successful therapy for phobias was Dr Joseph Wolpe, Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA.Â
In the 1960s he discovered that phobic could be “desensitized” if victims were trained to relax and gradually confront the phobia in their imaginations. And now most therapists encourage patients to confront their fears in real-life situations.
Jean Carper in his article how phobias can be healed explains this treatment thus: “A woman in her late 60s became panicky about riding in lifts and came to a therapist for help. First, she and the therapist looked into a lift; the next week, they stepped inside. After 5 weeks, they rode up a floor Together. At the end of 2 months the woman took her first ride alone
