NordicTrack is the best known of the cross-country ski simulators. You won’t have real skis on your feet or real ski poles in your hands, but otherwise, machines like this feel a lot like Nordic skiing. Just slip your feet into the stirrups mounted on the footboards,grab the handles affixed to cords that run through pulleys or vertical poles in front of your body, and begin the gliding stride of cross-country skiing. The ball of your foot will stay anchored, but your heel will rise with each stride. The motion is left arm/right eg and right arm/left leg, and this requires more concentration and coordination than many other kinds of equipment. As with stairsteppers, the footboards of some machines operate independently of each other. Some are more like stationary bikes or elliptical exercisers, because when one foot moves forward, the other automatically moves back.
