Retrograde Motion
Retrograde Motion
One new fitness technique is called retro walking. Proponents assert that walking backward on a treadmill can strengthen the quadriceps, the calves, and even the abdominals, according to a report in the Berkeley Wellness Letter. Even a two-mile-per-hour retro pace can help your fitness. Experts suggest beginning with just a quarter-mile retro walk, even if you are in good shape, and gradually increasing your distance. You also can shift your workouts on a treadmill, a stairstepper, or an elliptical trainer, but not on a studio bike, because your feet can slip off the pedals and cause an injury.Retro walking also is not recommended for anyone with balance or back problems or for elderly exercisers. For anyone else, it is an interesting
variation on cross-training.
