Treadmills
The treadmill, another popular workhorse of the workout world, resembles a short, wide conveyor belt. There often is a support frame partway down the sides or a grip rail below the console. This machine conveys cardiovascular health to users. Its continuously looping treadbelt, which in commercial models is powered by an electric motor, travels over a cushioned deck that is about four to six feet long and 16 to 22 inches wide.
When you start the treadmill, you select the speed at which the belt moves so you can walk, jog, or run at the speed you selected. In addition to increasing or decreasing the speed of the belt, you also can adjust the incline of the deck from flat to an uphill “climb.” Whatever speed and angle you select, you have to keep up with the treadmill’s speed at the chosen angle. If it is going too fast, or if the incline is too steep, you have to slow the belt speed down or decrease the angle; otherwise, you will eventually be carried off the back end. Most treadmills also have a stop button—nicknamed the panic button—in case you have a problem and need to stop the treadbelt quickly. The machine will stop automatically if you catch your clothing and begin to fall or lose your balance. Simpler models, including most designed for home use, are powered by the user. If you get on one of these, your pace determines the speed of the treadbelt. The faster you walk or run, the faster the treadbelt moves and the more intense the exercise. When you slow down, it slows down.
You can walk your way to fitness on the treadmill in your gym or in the comfort of your own home. When using a treadmill, keep your posture and motions as natural as possible. This means lift your torso, let your arms swing, and keep your head up and looking forward as you walk or jog. Don’t lean on the handrails, and don’t press forward on the handlebar as if you were pushing a grocery cart. Walk or run in a full stride, hit the treadbelt with your heel, roll through the foot, and take off from the toe. If you find yourself moving toward the back of the treadmill, slow it down a notch so you don’t slide off the back end. If you are not working hard enough, speed it up or select a steeper angle.
