How do Western Reiki and Usui’s Dharma Reiki differ?

Medicine Dharma Reiki (Menchhos Reiki, Usui’s Dharma Reiki), was the original Reiki system that incorporated the Buddhist tantras and empowerments derived from the ‘Lightning Flash Tantra’ and Usui’s methods.

The Universal Reiki system, which has flourished in the West as a direct result of Takata’s teachings, is but a simplified portion of the complete reiki teachings chujiro hayashi who was one of usui students, taught Universal Reiki to Mrs. Takata. Usui sought to teach a form of reiki which was for every one. . Universal Reiki, which comes from the lineage of Hayashi and Takata, is the familiar form which most western practitioners have in part and very few hold intact today. However, this form is vastly different to Usui’s original system.

Today, many western teachers describe traditional Western Reiki as the ‘Usui System of Natural Healing’ and there had been many attempts at copyrighting the ‘Usui’ name. However, in light of this new information, and looking at the actual origins and developments of the Reiki system, it is clear that the original Usui System of Natural Healing bears little or no resemblance to Western Reiki.

The western system would be better represented as the Hayashi/Takata Reiki system. In the last twenty years, Reiki in the West has taken many new forms. With the development of many new Western Reiki systems, there have been a number of changes to what is referred to as the Usui System of Natural 1 listing. For example, names like Sekhem, Seichim, Karuna, Tera-Mai, Johre, Raku-Reiki, Tibetan Reiki, and other recent Reiki developments, would be best described as non-traditional Reiki systems. These systems have largely been adapted and derived from Traditional Western Reiki, channeled information and other esoteric traditions.
