USUI REIKI SYSTEM

Historical research derived from Dr. Usui’s notes has determined that the origins of Reiki date back to Shakyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha (563-480) BC).

During his teaching career, which spanned some 50 years, Shakyamuni spoke the Sutra of Medicine Buddha. The Lord of the Lapis Lazuli Light (the Buddhist archetype for Healing). This teaching was passed from Shakyamuni to a physician known as ‘Ratnagharba, the Womb of all Jewels’.

The teaching passed to Ratnagharba was known as the ‘Tantra of the Lightning Flash’. Throughout time, this healing tantra was passed from teacher to disciple in an unbroken lineage for over a thousa: rears.

During this time, it made the journey across Central Asia from India, Tibet and China, and finally Japan in the 7th Century by the great Buddhist master kobo Dashi. These teachings were handed down through out time from master to disciple, until they made their way to a Buddhist monastery in Hokkaido. Japan. Here these teachings stayed untouched by human hand for some three hundred years.

As the Buddhist monks in residence were of little education and did not know how to apply the teachings, whilst undertaking renovations of their ‘monastery, they sold these texts to a book dealer who was touring the area looking for interesting volumes.

The book dealer later carried these texts to Kyoto and it was here that Mikao Usui came into contact with the Teachings. Soon after, Usui began studying these sacred texts with his Buddhist master, Watanabe Senior.

It was after much diligence and practice that Usui began to grasp the essential teachings of the Tantra. The teachings laid the foundation to the tradition.
