Now do you want to hear a very amusing story? A young Western widow came to me complaining that her menses had ceased. She had been to another doctor who had tried a number of remedies to bring on the menses without success. Her husband had been dead over a year. I began to question the girl thinking she was exhibiting all the symptoms of an early pregnancy. She said this could not possibly be as her husband had been dead for over a year.
I sent her home, consulted all my books on gynecology and even borrowed some from a friend. I saw her two weeks later and her womb was filling with fluid and was imitating a normal pregnancy. I decided to question her some more. Being careful to be exceedingly tactful as she was a Western woman, we got to the point of sexual intercourse. Oh, yes, she had engaged eleven times over the past year but was suffering under the delusion that women could only become pregnant from their husbands because that was the way in which God had ordained it.
I explained carefully to her that was not the case; she insisted that might be so for Japanese but was not true for Christian Westerners. I asked her to wait in my waiting room while I called a Western colleague and to his unrestrained amusement explained her peculiar belief. He agreed to see her and her mother returned to California and were never seen again in Japan. Since she was a healthy young woman, I assume the birth was normal and both she and her mother were proved wrong.
